INITIATION COURSE |
INTRODUCTION
The DUEÑAS programme , sponsored by the Dermitek Clinic, organizes the Wing Tsun initiation course with the objective of providing safety to women in a situation of possible physical assault. The techniques that will be taught are based on the thousand-year-old Chinese arts of Wing Tsun and Escrima.
“The only thing better than knowing how to defend ourselves when assaulted is for this assault to never take place.”
We are aware that AN ASSAULT can take place, and that the objective is not only to hurt a person but also to subjugate and dominate THE VICTIM.
This course is addressed to ALL WOMEN, not only battered women. All women can be assaulted at a certain moment in their lives.
We are aware that a very physically strong person has a great advantage in the case of an assault, specially, if the opponent is less strong and less aggressive. But thanks to this course we can learn to be aware of the “strength” and to work with it, work with the physical capacity and the optimum management of “aggressivity”.
This learning has two basic pillars: the psychological and the physical.
COURSE INSTRUCTORS
María Luisa López Ibarrondo : Psychologist. Psychological aspects of the assault. The psychologist works in a previous aspect, the reinforcement of self-esteem.
Soraya Campana : Expert in Win Tsun and Escrima. Physical aspects of the course. She works full time in the teaching of this type of courses to help women. Soraya Campana was a student of the Sifu Víctor Gutiérrez, currently the European Director of the Training World Programme of Wing Tsun Combat and cofounder of the Dueñas Programme.
THE TECHNIQUES
What are Wing Tsun and Escrima?
They are two martial arts that complement each other and are designed to promote the development of the intelligence, the sensitivity, the strategy and pressure in training, over strength or learning hundreds of techniques. All this makes it adequate for people with not too much physical strength.
Why Wing Tsun?
Because it is a combat art designed by two women, two Shaolin nuns that realized that the traditional techniques were not useful and did not offer defence guarantees for a person that is physically weaker. Therefore, they created a system that is based on strategy and in four combat concepts:
• If the way is free, move forward
• If you bump against something, stick to it
• If the attack is stronger, give way
• If the opponent moves back, continue moving forward
Thanks to a surprising fact, Wing Tsun is based on the training of the sense of touch or Chi Sao (sticky hands). This makes it completely different from other sports activities and self-defence methods.
GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES
Mark frontiers:
This phase confronts us with ways of acting in our daily lives. Therefore, the concern must be focused on behaving in a global manner.
To check the position outside the framework of an assault.
To feel and transmit safety, trust and strength in such a way that our frontiers are clearly set and no one dares to go beyond. .
Take care of the frontiers:
Learn to feel the “sign of alarm”. Learn to listen in these situations. Pay attention to our own feelings as an only parameter. It will be referred to as “yellow area”.
Defend the frontiers:
Learn to react as soon as possible. We are in the “red area”.
To work on the fear that most women have to hit. Not to do so positions us in dangerous situations that can have disastrous consequences.
THE DERMITEK PROJECT
Doctors Nerea Landa and Jose Luis Azpiazu, Directors of the Dermitek Clinic (Bilbao) add, “This initiative is a way to thank all those women that have helped Dermitek grow, providing a tool that can be very useful on certain occasions, in the same manner in which we help all women in other social aspects of great importance."
The Dermitek Clinic in Bilbao continues with its tradition of providing support to the world of women, which has recently included the backing of women artists and the support provided to the Association of Women with Breast Cancer in Bizkaia.
The attendance to the course has exceeded the best estimates. According to Dr. Nerea Landa and Dr. Jose Luis Azpiazu, directors of the Clinic and on behalf of the whole team “we would like to thank all those women that have helped Dermitek grow by providing support to all women in social aspects of great importance”.
